Changing Schools: A student’s observations

By Mya Caldwell

This is my first year at TPJA. So far it has been an awesome experience. My brother, who has been here for three years, kept telling me about the big differences between TPJA and my previous school. I was thinking that it wouldn’t be a big deal because schools are pretty much the same. But I was wrong, it was a big deal.

One big difference from my previous school and TPJA is the uniform policy. At my previous school the kids didn’t follow the dress code. When the teachers saw the kids breaking the rules, they wouldn’t do anything. But at TPJA, the uniform policy is strictly followed.

I have been very impressed with the fact that the teachers at Tempe Prep are often available for tutoring. Previously, I could only get help if I truly struggled. Here, the teachers have many dates and times available. When tutoring, they ask us questions to lead us to the right answers.

I’ve found that the biggest difference is the amount of homework that we receive at this school. At the school I attended last year, they typically gave us one page of homework and about 30 minutes of reading. At TPJA, our teachers give a lot of homework and that’s OK because it reinforces our education. If you pay attention at school, it will make your homework much easier at home.

In conclusion, my brother was right. It was a big change from school to school, but I think it has been a change for the best.
