Senior Marissa Rich on upcoming girls basketball season, state title defense

The Lady Knights hope to hold the trophy once again in 2013

by Serena Abouchar

How do you feel about the upcoming season?

I feel very confident and optimistic. We have many strong people returning from last year including offensive star Camille Zimmerman, and defensive specialists, Marie Bryant and Lisa Dischinger. We also have a very experienced senior class, not to mention that we have won over former soccer star, Maddie Ternyik. She will be a great addition to our defense and her energy and hard work will help carry the team. There are a lot of teams out to get us this year and many people think that our title was a fluke. We want to prove that we are not a “One-n-done” team, and we are very confident as we face the regular season.

Do you think you could win state again this year?

The Lady Knights hope to hold the trophy once again in 2013

I am very confident that we can take the title again. We have to be smart and very controlled this year, and we cannot underestimate any team. We know that teams are out to take down the state champs, but I know that with dedication, hard work, discipline, and heart, we have a very high chance of becoming champions once again.

As a senior, what advice do you have for freshmen and other underclassmen?

My advice to underclassmen would be to strive to create strong friendships. Laugh together, work hard together, win together, and be true to each other. A team cannot be successful if its members do not weed out the drama that is so inevitable among girls. Not only do strong friendships make your time on the team more fun, they also make the victories sweeter.

Is there anything you would like to say to the Tempe Prep community as you start the season?

I would like to tell the Tempe Prep community to support one another. Whether it be on or off the field or court, success is easier to come by with the faithful support of a loving community.
