Students organizing two new clubs at Tempe Prep

The Earth is a beautiful and perfect environment to sustain life. Unfortunately many people in our society don’t see the importance of respecting the Earth’s environment. Marisa Bennett and Nizhoni Saenz of 11A are two of the few that want to change this devastating problem throughout TPA. With the sponsoring of Ms. Tobin I’m sure they can make a difference. Both Marisa and Nizhoni had similar ideas: to help the community and show awareness about the environment. “We love the environment, and want to help the community,” they said. That’s when an Environmental Club started to take form. The first official meeting of the club is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 am in Room 402. Discussing environmental controversies, isn’t the only part of the club. Projects and volunteering opportunities from the Arizona Department of Transportation, for example, will be available, such as bird watching, pulling weeds, and all sorts of science projects. Not only that, but with the fall season closing in, volunteers are needed to help with TPA’s scorched garden. Together we can bring it to sprout vegetation and fruits once more. We must remember that our planet should never be taken for granted, but taken care of.

In addition to the blooming up and coming Environmental Club, it is my utmost pleasure to announce another new engaging club beginning at TPA. Tempe Prep’s very own “Herstory Club,” is part history, part women’s studies club dedicated to learning about some of the greatest women throughout history. It also will feature discussions on some of the most important issues facing women today, guest speakers, visual media, and a whole lot of fun! As founder and Co-President along with Senior Erin Guiney, and with the help of the club’s faculty advisor, Dr. Olivia Salcido, we hope for our club to be something of a captivating and unique peer-lead hands-on approach to the classical studies on which TPA’s curriculum is founded. “There are a lot of clubs on campus either involving competition or languages, but there has never been a club just for learning, and learning about women for that matter,” Erin stated. “The Herstory Club will allow students the opportunity to learn about different and fresh perspectives that supplement what they’re already learning in Humane Letters, and even apply it to their own lives and the real world.” With First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as our intuitive team leader and mascot and a different extraordinary woman each week (one week abolitionist/humanitarian Harriet Tubman to producer/comedian Amy Poehler the next), it’ll never cease to be fascinating and educational! Occurring every Friday at high school lunch in Room 201, we encourage everyone to come and check it out. See you there!
