Congressional Award Club encourages students to set and achieve ambitious goals

MassieThese days many of us are looking for a way to “stand out” in the eyes of colleges. The Congressional Awards Club is a great opportunity to do so, without the hassle that one might think. Not only do the awards keep participants devoted to their goals, but colleges take a liking to the projects that are done. Better yet, the program is voluntary, non-competitive and requires a small, one-time $15 fee.

What are the Congressional Awards? Once participants register, they are faced with levels and must set goals in four different areas of improvement: Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. As goals are reached , participants will earn Congressional Award Certificates, Bronze, Silver, or Gold medals for their achievements. They are awarded by a local congressman or woman with a great amount of honor. The best part is that: you move at your own pace in your spare time or with your friends.

Earning awards can be a challenge as well as bring back self confidence. And if you already are doing something you love, such as volunteering for the community or playing sports, why not earn awards for it?

“I have been in the Congressional Awards since the summer before my freshman year,” says Jacob Massie (11C), president of the Congressional Awards Club. “I have actually just finished the program because I completed my gold medal. Any certificates or medals from the Congressional Awards look great on college applications, so it will give me an edge in the college admission process.”

No matter where you stand in life, the Congressional Awards is a great challenge to try and overcome.
