TPA athletes hone strength, skills in track and field

By Maya Kostov

As we progress further into this year, we are seeing some amazing performance from our TPA track team. Although there are only 19 kids on the team, the majority of them have advanced to the state meets in at least one event.

Track025Track, or more formerly known as Track and Field, has many events. The non-running events are pole vault, long jump, shot put, and discus. Pole vault is a track and field event where an athlete must use a long pole and try and make it over another pole.

The long jump is when an athlete uses speed, strength, and agility to launch themselves as far as possible from their starting point.

Shot put is the event where athletes have a heavy circular ball in their hands and they must attempt to launch it as far as possible.

And lastly, there is discus, which is when an athlete must take a slightly weighted disk and attempt to throw it father than their opponent.

Then you come to the running portion where there is the 100 yard dash, a 2 mile race (that would be 8 laps on the track), 300 hurdle race, 100 hurdle race, and then sprints.

To improve in a sport such as track takes a lot of effort and determination. You have to have the mental stamina as well as commitment to try and improve your time by even a fraction of a second.

Katherine Camberg says, ” I like track because it’s a great way to stay in shape and since the team is so small there is a lot more room for team bonding, especially meets.” Kat has also qualified for state in pole vaulting.

We also have many students such as Morgan Cryder who broke the school record for the 300-meter hurdles at the first meet of the season.

Let’s hope all of these dedicated athletes do well in their next meets. Go Knights!Track046 Track050 Track001 Track002 Track004 Track005 Track006 Track007 Track008 Track009 Track010 Track013 Track019 Track029 Track038 Track039 Track040 Track045
