Coach Jenn Stephens inspires swimmers to reach lofty goals

By Nolan Bailey

Have you ever had an awesome coach? That is the exact leadership that the TPA swim team is under. With passion and positivity, Coach Jenn and Coach Brian will lead the swim team to victory.

Stephens JennWhen  asked why she thought swim was unique, Coach Jenn said it was because it is about people with different strengths coming together to produce a successful team. Success is exactly what will come from these two wonderful coaches. This year’s swim team is the biggest yet.

Coach Jenn and Coach Brian have created a clever system to get swimmers ready for high school competition. Middle school swimmers will start with the fundamentals of swimming with Coach Brian and learn to break out of their shells and become advanced competitors. As Coach Brian says, “When you are racing, you’re racing against yourself and the clock.”

Coach Jenn has also found a fun way of motivating her swimmers. Candy! She has the high schoolers race for candy. She says she goes through about 40 pounds of candy a year. I don’t know about you but I’d race for candy. Coach Brian also said he uses sweets for a little extra push when things get tough.

The swim team seems to have great chemistry both with each other and their coaches. Like Coach Brian said, “When coaching kids, you have to leave everything at the gate and come in with a positive attitude.” The high school team is already off to a great start, meeting near best scores. The boys also won the 200 medley relay.

With sights set high, the TPA swim team will have a great year.
