Ask Athena

April often arrives in a blur of blooming flowers and mounting deadlines, and this year has been no different. As spring began to stretch its limbs, so did the energy on campus. The classes have buzzed with excitement, from the final push in academics to the whirl of extracurricular events that defined the season. April marked a turning point when the finish line of the school year came into view, and so did a path to it still packed with activity. Whether it was the spring sports season wrapping up or all the seniors meeting final deadlines, April reminded us that for Tempe Prep students growth does not stop with warmer weather, it only accelerates. As seniors step closer to graduation and underclassmen look ahead with new goals, the spirit of perseverance and celebration mingles in every classroom and courtyard. Let us take a moment to reflect on all the moments, big and small, that made April a month to remember.

Q: Dear Athena, how can I stay calm during finals week when the stress feels overwhelming?

A: Great question! Finals week can definitely feel crowded, but it is all about managing your time and your mindset. Start by breaking your study sessions into smaller, manageable chunks. Take regular breaks and study for 25-30 minutes, then take a five-minute break. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat well, and hydrate. And remember, it is okay to ask for help if you need it. Deep breaths; you’ve got this!

Q: Athena, I’ve been procrastinating on studying for my finals. How do I get back on track?

A: Procrastination happens to the best of us, but it is never too late to get started! Try setting up a study schedule, prioritizing the most difficult subjects, and making a checklist of tasks. You should not study for hours straight; instead, start with short bursts of focused study time, and reward yourself with a quick break when you finish a task. Small steps add up quickly!

Q: Athena, finals week is making it hard for me to sleep. Do you have any tips for getting a good night’s rest?

A: Getting enough sleep is crucial for your brain to perform its best on test day! You will perform better after a restful night and a good breakfast. Try sticking to a regular bedtime and avoiding caffeine in the afternoon or evening. Establish a calming bedtime routine, like reading a book or doing some light stretching. If you are stressed about studying, remind yourself that for retention, sleep is just as important as studying. Finally, make sure to have a filling, healthy breakfast.
