Math Club hosts first middle-school competition

By Renae Brown

On Feb, 2 TPA’s Math Club hosted a middle-school competition, in the form of a “Jeopardy” game,

Students answered math problems in hopes of winning cash prizes. The first place winners received $40, second place received $30 and third place received $15.

There were 10 teams and 25 kids participating. The first place champion team was “Roadrunners,” consisting of seventh graders Sameer Maldonado and Nathanael Gastelo; second place was “The Odd Numbers” with eighth graders Gwen Hamilton, Natalia Cruz and Reese Smitham; third place was the “Mathletes” with seventh graders Peyton Berry and Sarah Riley.

The math competition was organized by junior Kinglee Tham. She was helped by juniors Jenna Carter-Easton, Alexandria Genchev and Jacob Prost. Leading up to the competition, Kinglee worked hard to provide everything needed to run the competition. She supplied prizes, goodie bags and the questions, which covered sixth through eighth grade math topics. Some questions included PEMDAS, exponents, quadratic equations and geometry.

This was the first event that the Math Society held at TPA, and it hopes to continue  the competition next year. If you’re interested in expanding your math knowledge, Math Club is open to all high schoolers.

“On most meetings, we learn about some sort of concept which we don’t usually go over in school. For example, we watched a video on cryptography last meeting… and then encrypted our own messages,” said Kinglee. The club meets every Tuesday after school in room 402.
