Middle School Sports Round Up

Arizona’s winter months may be colder than usual, but middle school sports are bringing the heat in their growth as teams this winter season. Athletes and coaches alike are working hard to improve skills, develop team bonds and most importantly, have fun.

So far, the middle school baseball team has a record of 2-5, with an overall ranking of 11th out of 14 in their division. Although the team has faced some disappointing losses, they are maintaining hope for playoffs! With three games left, Head Coach Kevin Costijan is improving the skills and teamwork of the 19 players who are ready to persevere for the rest of the season.

The small but mighty middle school softball team has experienced successes with three wins and two losses. With only 8 players, the minimum number a softball team needs, the athletes are working on their throwing techniques and communication on the field. Head Coach Lynnae Pina says that the players’ confidence as a team and as individuals has improved. The middle school softball team plans to continue growing and hopes to finish the season strong.

“It’s not about winning, it’s about developing skills…(and) becoming part of a team,” says Head Coach Iain Macdonald. The middle school girls soccer team may not have won as many games as they hoped this season but they are learning to keep fighting for the ball on the field.

On the flip side, the middle school boys soccer team of 15 players has also experienced some challenging games. Regardless, they have improved their passing and kicking abilities, essential skills for the game, and continue to showcase their determination to stay strong and grow.

The middle school sports’ teams are learning to improve their athleticism, communicate on and off the field and persevere – foundations that will not only help them currently, but on high school teams in the future.
