TPA students care for pigs at Better Piggies Rescue service project

By Renae Brown

How many people have had the opportunity to cuddle a pig?

On Feb. 25, 20 TPA students had the amazing experience of volunteering at Better Piggies Rescue, a non-profit organization aimed at rescuing, rehabilitating and educating about pot belly pigs.

At the Better Piggies Rescue sanctuary, the students went on a brief tour of the facility, during which they were educated about the pig hierarchy, the work of Better Piggies Rescue and the different tasks of volunteers..

Afterwards, the students divided themselves into groups to complete these tasks. One group cleaned the pigs’ pen. Better Piggies houses a total of 162 pigs, so the sanctuary is bound to get messy.

Another group unloaded food packs, while others assembled  beds for the pigs. Known as a Coolaroo, these elevated beds allow for fresh air to waft the underside of the pigs as they lie down.

The fourth group interacted and played with the pigs. A majority of the pot belly pigs were rescued from horrible situations, so interaction is a crucial part of their rehabilitation.

The service project, organized by the TPA Congressional Award Club, was a fulfilling time for all students who attended. Thank you to junior Niamh Waddell for coordinating this activity.  If you were unable to come this time, you can still volunteer with the pigs! After paying a $30 fee and attending a volunteer orientation, anyone can volunteer at Better Piggies Rescue.
